Spending a portion of Thanksgiving reading Lua tutorials is probably bad form, but I couldn't get the wireless status stuff working that is included with the ion3 distribution, so I fixed up my own.

Some of the table stuff is nice, but overall, I think I'd appreciate Lua a lot more if I was actually using it as it was intended - to extend C apps. (Especially since you can compile to bytecode for distribution, if you were trying to keep an all binary for some reason.)

But hey, it even has a signal strength meter! :P I think my Ion env is temporarily complete.

I just upgraded to the development version of Ion, and I've fallen in love with it all over again.

Gnome certainly is nice, but so is knowing where your windows are without hunting for them or using the mouse. Streamlined and delish.

All that's left is getting the wireless info in the status bar working properly, and I think it's probably as close to a perfect working environment as I can get. (especially now that the annoying gtk-focus bug was finally fixed after two years.) This is also forcing me to look at Lua a little closer. Woot.

Since a few of ya'll have messaged me, I'm assuming it's public knowledge now that I resigned yesterday.

I won't bother filling in blanks with reasons why or why not (those of you I've talked to know already) - and I've sent some detailed rationalizations to various people inside of SixApart... but it really just comes down to "I got a better offer."

I wish I could have been in the office, and had closer relationships with all the new people brought on since LJ and 6A teamed up - but regardless of that, I'll really be missing everybody. I think we all made a pretty good team, I don't think I've ever worked with such skilled and dedicated people. (No, that's not just blowing smoke... if I didn't mean it, I just wouldn't have posted. :)

My last day is Dec 2nd - I'm still here, hackin away until then. After that point, you've all got my contact info. I fully expect everyone to keep in touch with me, or else I'll share all the dirt I've accumulated over the last 2 years. :)

We took the kiddo around gathering candy from neighbors, then I donned the EvilMask®, and began scaring the absolute bejesus out of trick or treaters. We had quite the system laid out. Nadine would warn me of their estimated age as they approached, so I could adjust my scare tactics accordingly. Then she'd walk across the window, so they'd see and expect her to open the door. I would instead, while I simultaneously shut off the porch light, and screamed.

A 6th grade princess jumped 3 feet into the air. A younger girl (who I heard say "I'm scared" as she walked up the porch) was on the verge of tears, then laughed after I told her to have a good night. A pack of older kids made fun of their friend who fell backwards into them and yelled "WHAT WAS -THAT-, MAN??"

All in all, a good night.

Luna is honestly an evil cat. Horrible noisemaker in the middle of the night, and quite frankly, a complete bitch when she's hungry.

But when she lets Naia do stuff like THIS to her without clawing her eyes out... I guess it all balances out.

Spent most of the entire morning waiting. Waiting through traffic in the rain and slick roads, waiting for the ultrasound, waiting for the doc to check the ultrasound himself, waiting for the midwife to chat, waiting to have blood drawn - not getting blood drawn on the 1st attempt, so waiting for another nurse to give it a go. Waiting through a drive through for some TacoTime. Blaaaaah.

Coming away with some pics of the new kiddo makes it all worth it, though.

Amongst the swag scored at OSCon was a 64mb usb stick.

I've never bothered owning one of these, so I was a little overexcited. Using my laptop more often has made me wish for an easier way to carry pgp/ssh/vpncert keys around with me, so I copied all of my shit over to the thing during one of the last presentations of the day.

Went out to Rock Bottom, drank some beer, and realized that I couldn't feel it anymore in my pocket. That's right, sometime after copying all of my private keys to this fucking thing, the usb stick fell through a HOLE in my pocket, and is now god knows where.

I'm really *extremely* careful about my priv keys. My pgp key was from 1998. :( I just spent the better part of the evening distributing revocations for my pgp stuff, changing authkeys files on the vast array of machines I have access on, and revoked the vpn cert for internal Spime stuff.

On the plus side... openvpn makes revoking access pretty easy, and my keys were so damn old, I guess it was about time to do this anyway. I'm pissed I don't have the stick anymore, though. :( No more ssh rsa key! 4096 bit pgp key! .... eh fuck, who am I kidding, this blows. I'm pretty mad at myself.

back from vacation

... and it was just what I needed.

Road trip to Vegas, taking “lesser traveled” highways, and speeding in a rental with my pal, Trevor. On the way down, we checked out the Utah Salt Flats and stole some rocks from Bryce Canyon. Really, damn beautiful scenery.

Lightning storms like crazy in southern Utah. Flash flooding, fires, etc. Wish I had some better action pics of that stuff.
Ridiculously hot in Vegas - the car thermostat’s record was 116. Construction delays at Hoover Dam gave me a new appreciation for air conditioning. Found time to do some coasters, wait about 2 hours for dinner at the Cheesecake Factory, and get fairly drunk while stumbling around casinos.

Drove straight through on the way back. Realized that rural desert “towns” have some really, really, really creepy shit in them.
